Heterogeneous Concurrent Modeling and Design
The Ptolemy project studies modeling, simulation, and design of concurrent, real-time, embedded systems. The focus is on assembly of concurrent components. The key underlying principle in the project is the use of well-defined models of computationthat govern the interaction between components. A major problem area being addressed is the use of heterogeneous mixtures of models of computation. A software system called Ptolemy II is being constructed in Java. The work is conducted in the Center for Hybrid and Embedded Software Systems (CHESS) in theDepartment of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences of theUniversity of California at Berkeley. The project is directed by Prof. Edward Lee. The project is named after Claudius Ptolemaeus, the second century Greek astronomer, mathematician, and geographer.
This center is aimed at developing model-based and tool-supported design methodologies for real-time fault tolerant software on heterogeneous distributed platforms. We are bridging the gap between computer science and systems science by developing the foundations of a modern systems science that is simultaneously computational and physical. This represents a major departure from the current, separated structure of computer science (CS), computer engineering (CE), and electrical engineering (EE): it reintegrates information and physical sciences. The center was initially funded in part by an Information Technology Research (ITR) project from the National Science Foundation (NSF)and now receives funding from government and industry.
Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are integrations of computation, networking, and physical processes. Embedded computers and networks monitor and control the physical processes, usually with feedback loops where physical processes affect computations and vice versa. The economic and societal potential of such systems is vastly greater than what has been realized, and major investments are being made worldwide to develop the technology. There are considerable challenges, particularly because the physical components of such systems introduce safety and reliability requirements qualitatively different from those in general-purpose computing. Moreover, the standard abstractions used in computing do not fit the physical parts of the system well.

When the Biocybernetics Program began, the relevant data base consisted of the entire body of Psychophysiological literature. This literature is concerned with manifestations of physiological activity that can be recorded from the intact human and with inferences that can be made from such recordings about psychological states and events.
While this work provided a useful substrate for the Biocybernetics Program and identified in a useful fashion the broadening areas of research, the Program treaded largely virgin territory because (a) electrophysiological research was concerned primarily with the recording and analysis of physiological responses that seemed particularly sensitive to the changes in the arousal state of the subject rather than with specific cognitive activity. {b) The technology of psychophysiology did not permit ready application of the on-line, real time, analytical techniques that were necessary conditions for the implementation of closely coupled man/machine systems.

October 24, 2013 DARPA seeks to develop a new understanding of complex, systems-based disorders of the brain. A major goal of this effort is to deliver a platform technology for precise therapy in humans living with neuropsychiatric and neurologic disease, including veterans and active duty soldiers suffering from mental health issues. Methods developed through this program will use neural recording and stimulation to close the loop on therapeutic treatment in individuals who receive minimal benefits from currently available treatments. This program could lead to improved knowledge of multiple neural subnetworks of the brain that are involved in disease and illness. This program combines novel device development, complex modeling of behaving human neural systems, clinical neurology, and animal research in order to advance the understanding and translation of safe, effective neurotechnological therapies.
DARPA created the Systems-Based Neurotechnology for Emerging Therapies (SUBNETS) program to pursue advances in neuroscience and neurotechnology that could lead to new clinical understanding of how neuropsychological illnesses manifest in the brain and to advanced therapies to reduce the burden and severity of illness in afflicted troops and veterans. The program will pursue a new investigative approach that establishes the characteristics of distributed neural systems and attempts to develop and apply therapies that incorporate near real-time recording, analysis and stimulation in next-generation devices inspired by current Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).

Soul Catcher 2025
As long ago as 1995 British Telecom announced it was developing a memory chip designed to capture a person’s entire lifetime’s experiences. Implanted behind the eye, BT said, the chip would record the person’s thoughts, feelings and memories and store them in digital form.
BT confirmed the chip would be ready for use by the year 2025, hence the name: Soul Catcher 2025.
According to the literature available at the time, the Soul Catcher 2025 chip was being designed to attach directly to the optical nerve, where it would store incoming sensory impulses that could then be downloaded and played back on a computer.
Alternatively, the impulses could be implanted in someone else’s brain.
Peter Cochrane, Head of BT’s Advanced Applications and Technologies back in the 90s, announced through the press that an entire lifetime’s experiences could be captured and stored in about 10 terabytes of memory. The research program was being funded to the tune of £25 million, he confirmed.
And Dr Chris Winter of BT’s Artificial Life Team proudly asserted: “This is the end of death. By combining this information with a record of a person’s genes, we could recreate a person physically, emotionally and spiritually.”
Other reports at the time, most notably in the Telegraph and the Mail, expressed concerns that the Soul Catcher 2025 chip could even be used to record the lifetime experiences of a dying person and implant them in a newborn baby, so that the baby would start life where the dead person left off, so to speak.
When questioned about the ethics involved, Dr Winter replied that BT needed to remain at the cutting edge of telecommunications technologies, and that therefore the program was justified.
Other implications of the Soul Catcher 2025 implant include its use as a permanent bio-digital ID chip – which, somewhat ironically, brings us full circle.
Imagine if the government decided to implant prisoners with Soul Catchers instead of RFIDs.
And worse still, that on the prisoners’ deaths, the Soul Catchers were removed and implanted in newborn babies, as per British Telecom’s frightening ambitions to deploy their immortality chip by the year 2025.
How many generations before every newborn would be controlled – not only by the ‘stimoceiver’ chip implanted behind their eye, but by those specific impulses captured from the dead person’s brain which Big Brother has already decided the newborn should receive?

Smart Dust for the brain is being proposed as the next step toward establishing a brain-computer interface. The system is officially called "neural dust" and works to "monitor the brain from the inside." Inventors are attempting to overcome the hurdle of how to best implant sensors that can remain over the course of one's life.
Researchers at Berkeley Engineering believe they have found a novel way to achieve this:
This paper explores the fundamental system design trade-offs and ultimate size, power, and bandwidth scaling limits of neural recording systems.
A network of tiny implantable sensors could function like an MRI inside the brain, recording data on nearby neurons and transmitting it back out.
The smart dust particles would all contain an extremely small CMOS sensor capable of measuring electrical activity in nearby neurons.
The researchers envision a piezoelectric material backing the CMOS capable of generating electrical signals from ultrasound waves. The process would also work in reverse, allowing the dust to beam data back via high-frequency sound waves. The neural dust would also be coated with polymer.
The investment in neuroscience has received a $100 million dollar commitment via Obama's BRAIN project, while Europe has committed $1.3 billion to build a supercomputer replica of the brain in a similarly comprehensive and detailed fashion as the Human Genome Project mapped DNA.

The CIA was created in 1947 to serve as the government's

extensive program of human experimentation, using drugs,
